The MD-24 ECO COM1 is a Steinel passive-infrared ceiling motion detector in the concealed-wiring version, in a white round housing 109 mm in diameter and 74 mm high. It watches a full 360° circle below it and measures brightness; the threshold below which it switches the light on is adjustable from 2 to 1000 lx. Steinel intends it for indoor use: offices, meeting rooms, passageways and warehouses.What area it coversReach depends on the direction of movement. Someone walking across the field of view is detected within a circle 24 m in diameter (452 m²), someone walking straight towards it within a circle 5.5 m in diameter (24 m²). Compare both figures with the layout of the room: in a corridor, where people pass the detector side-on, it covers a long stretch, while a head-on approach is picked up only close by.It is a motion detector, not a presence detector – reacting to the small movements of someone seated is the job of its PD-24 sibling. The optimum mounting height is 2.8 m. Plug-in cover caps are supplied for masking out selected parts of the detection field.What lighting it can switchThe relay switches up to 2000 W of resistive load, but for LEDs a lower limit applies: 500 W for lamps above 8 W, no more than 50 LED or fluorescent lamps, and a capacitive load of up to 176 µF. Check these figures against the total wattage and the number of fittings the detector is to switch. It runs on 230 V, and the connection to the installation is made by an electrician.Up to 10 detectors can be connected in parallel to enlarge the detection area, and a push-button input lets the light also be switched on by hand.Settings and housingTime delay (5 s – 60 min) and brightness threshold are set with potentiometers or with the Smart Remote, which is not included; the threshold can also be stored with the Teach function at the current light level. The detector works in fully or semi-automatic mode – on by push-button, off automatically – and has a test mode for commissioning.The plastic housing is rated IP20, so the detector is for dry interiors only; it operates from −20 to +50 °C.
