The white STEINEL MD-8 ECO COM1 UP 087814 is a passive-infrared ceiling motion detector for concealed wiring. Its round plastic housing surrounds a central sensor lens. This is an on/off lighting-control device, rather than a dimmer or a detector intended to monitor seated presence.Plan coverage around the direction of movementThe sensor covers 360°, but the quoted 8 m reach is the diameter of the detection area for movement across the sensor, not its radius. For movement towards it, STEINEL specifies a 4.5 m diameter. Comparing these two patterns with the route through an office or passageway is more useful than treating the headline reach as equal in every direction.Installation height is 2–4 m, with 2.8 m identified as optimum. Supplied clip-in covers let the installer mask individual detection segments. The MD-8 detects motion: the seated-presence function associated with the PD-8 should not be assumed for this version.Choose when the lighting switchesThe brightness threshold can be set between 2 and 1000 lx, while the stay-on time runs from 5 seconds to 60 minutes. TEACH allows the threshold to be set using the prevailing light conditions. Fully automatic, semi-automatic and test modes are available, along with a push-button input. Settings can be changed using potentiometers or a compatible remote control; no remote is included.COM1 provides switching, not continuous light-level regulation. The resistive switching limit is 2000 W, whereas STEINEL gives a 500 W limit for LED lamps above 8 W. These ratings describe the connected load, not the detector's own consumption, and are not interchangeable.Check the ceiling installation before orderingThe housing measures 109 mm in diameter and 69 mm high. This UP version is designed for indoor ceiling installation with concealed wiring, including offices, meeting rooms, passageways and warehouses. A magnetic modular connection supports assembly. Up to 10 detectors can be interconnected by cable in a master/master arrangement.
